Au Natural.

So recently I've seen a couple people talking about this article about women who took pictures of themselves without make up on and it got me thinking.

Am I the only twenty five year old female who doesn't wear make up every day? Am I a weirdo for not wearing cover up and letting those horrendous red marks go uncovered every once and while? Is it weird eye liner makes my eyes freak out? Am I lazy because I don't put on eye shadow every day? Does lip gloss count as make up? How come no one taught me how to put on makeup?

Those are just a few of the questions that have been streaming through my brain about this issue lately. I don't wear make up. I mean, I like to every once and a while and I don't mind when a friend offers to do it for me and I will definitely get a professional to make me up for my wedding, but every day? No thank you.

Maybe it's because my mom doesn't wear a whole lot of make up and never sat me down to teach me make up 101 (is it even mom's job? I guess I could have learned from my friends, but whatever, haha). But then again my younger sister wears some form of make up every day and I'm pretty sure she can put on make up without looking like a clown or her eyes freaking out.

I will admit though that I feel a little less like a grown up because I've never bought anything from Sephora (with the exception of some perfume that is absolutely divine), I have no idea what the purpose of most creams and shadows are or why there are so many kinds of brushes (seriously explain that one to me please!), I've never plucked my eyes brows or waxed anything (yes I categorize that with makeup and grown upness) and I don't know how to change that.

But then again, I don't know that I want to change it. I like being makeupless. Maybe I'll change my mind some day and feel a little bit more grown up, but for now I think I'm fine the way I am. Me.

happy friday!

Nope, I'm with you on this one. Yes I like makeup, but do I wear it all the time or even the majority of the time? No. Maybe a little mascara but the majority of the time I'm free of anything other than my freckles and angel's kiss birthmark.

You don't need makeup when you're naturally hot.

You're lucky you can pull this off. I don't wear much make-up and mostly you probably won't even notice (just some mineral powder and mascara).
You're lucky though that Matt doesn't ask you to wear more makeup - I know a lot of guys who like it a lot.

katelin you're one of the lucky "natural beauties"!!! so jealous!
i always feel like makeup is such a personal choice, its like choosing a mate. you gotta go with what works for you and what ya need. Personally I LOVE it but I understand its not for everybody.
If you EVER need an artist or want to play around, give me a shout- thats what I DO; seriously thats my business Sweet Emotions Makeup Artistry!
Enjoy the makeup free days and your natural beauty!!!

It certainly helps that you are naturally stunning. However, I am *more* on your side of things. I do wear eye make-up every day, but that's it. No concealer, lipstick, etc. I also use very little hair product. I just couldn't be bothered.

PS. Hi. Miss you.

You are beautiful, lady! Keep rockin the natural look!

Even though I wear mascara and powder/blush almost every day, that's basically it. I'm too lazy/tired to do my eye makeup in the morning/always running late. And I"m totally with you - I have no idea what to do with millions of brushes and I've never bought anything at Sephora either.

I don't wear make-up to work ever, i wear some if i go out at night and some for other occasions. i just don't see the point

I've always had acne, so I definitely wear makeup daily. But I don't, like, DO MY MAKEUP so that I look all made up. I try to keep everything looking natural. A lot of people think I don't even wear any.

Caz said...

I'm totally with you Katelin!

I do wear Mascara pretty often because my eyes look like I have no eyelashes otherwise, but probably only 4 days a week? The other 3 I'll totally wear no make-up.

Ocasionally on a friday or saturday when we're going out I'll throw some eyeliner or shadow on but otherwise I'm mostly too lazy, and also think I look stupid with it on. Plus it all smudges constantly and I don't have the patience to fix my makeup 24/7.

Like everyone before me has said, "you are gorgeous'.. u don't need makeup... Bet your fiance doesn't care.. I know my bf doesn't... he wonders about what is in the lipstick or stuff we put on our faces like moisturizers..Besides u are saving yourself from allergies u could get as well as spending a ton of money on stuff that needs to be dumped after 6 mos...

Like everyone else has already said, you don't need makeup! Seriously.

I don't wear makeup at all anymore because I spend so much time outdoors for work. It's just not worth it, and I am too lazy to do my makeup on my days off. C'est la vie...

Good for you!

I am a 30 year old momma and NO i dont weear make up everyday. My hubbs-to-be thinks I am beautiful. My daughter thinks I am beautiful and I kind of like my funny pink haired self too! So blue shadow is just for those fun silly times!!! LOL

I hardly wear any makeup, but society definitely makes me feel like I should... even if for nothing more than to make me appear to be "more professional." (which I think is totally BS, but whatev). Too many pressures.

Some of us started wearing make-up to cover up the horrendous pimples we got in high school (ME!) and then I just kind of never want back to au natural except on the weekends, after working out and when I have a really killer tan going on.

I didn't get my eyebrows plucked or waxed until my senior year in high school though Lord knowsI should have. Italian eyebrows that run wild = scary.

But having met you first hand, I can see why you don't wear make-up. It's simple: you don't need to. You're freakin' gorgeous without it!

I never wore makeup until a few years ago. Now all I do wear is a foundation to even out my skin which gets very red. But I'm trying to go back a tinted moisturizer because it's a whole lot lighter and I haaaate makeup.

My routine is foundation and some rosebud salve on the lips. If I'm feeling fancy, I'll throw on some lip gloss and a bit of mascara!

I dont wear a lot of makeup -- tinited moisturizer, mascara, eyeliner, lip gloss out the door. Its fun to have and wear, but I'm more of a natural girl myself. I do however, LOVE skin care products.

i'm with you here, i never learned how to put on makeup from my mom and my friends were overly-excited about putting it on, thus i wouldn't let them touch me. occasionally i will put on some sort of blush or eye-stuff if it's a special event, but otherwise, my skin is bare and happy :)

I think this is the first year that I've started playing with makeup. As in, I have three colors of eyeliner, and one eyeshadow palette. But I only do that when I'm feeling bored and want a change.

The majority of time, as long as my skin looks mostly clear, I wash my face and walk out the door. Same thing for my hair. :)

So no, it's not an abnormal thing. I'm totally with you.

my mom also doesn't wear lots of make up. Everything I've learned was college.

For me, I have pretty pale skin so I love myself some bronzer. But in the summer time, i'm normally only wearing mascar and lipgloss.

Janet said...

you are lovely just the way you are. I'm impressed than you can live in So. Cal. and not get caught up in all the crazy beauty standards out there!

Also, I can't leave the house without bronzer and mascara, but I am a cousin of Caspar the Friendly Ghost

you're beautiful, wear what you want!

personally i don't wear much if any makeup to work. maybe some mascara if i have a client meeting.

for events though? i love to put makeup on, it makes me feel "clean up" and more special from my day to day lack of makeup wearing self.

and that works for me!

Well for one thing, you may be one of those who looks better without! Good for you :)

It is really great that you are comfortable without make up and what is even better is that when you do wear it you have the ability to look totally different and throw people off. Huge plus.

I am comfortable without wearing it, but only if I'm camping or something like that. It's odd because I have clear skin and everything, I just choose to wear a little cover up (powder-no foundation! and of course eyemakeup) I enjoy makeup. Plus--It makes me look way better. Ha ha. I do two "performance" kind of sports - Figure skating and ballet. Both which kind of encourage you to look good during just a practice session. I guess I am always in performance mode.

So go relish in your natural beauty and have a great day!

I don't wear makeup everyday, but I do love myself in it. I know for a fact that when I go to the hospital to deliver I'll have my hair and make up done.

what?

There are a lot of pictures taken at the hospital.

I forget to wear make up half the time haha. And also, I don't want to get up that much earlier in the morning to put it on!! Like you, I'll be hiring a professional to do my make up for the wedding, because I can't be trusted. And besides, when I do wear make up, its usually only some concealer, and eye make up. (And I can't figure out liquid eyeliner for the life of me!)

I dont wear make up either.

You look amazing as usual. :] I think it's great that you don't have some kind of attachment to makeup. & the fact that you've never waxed your eyebrows? JEALOUS! What I wouldn't give to have a natural arch!

Makeup is so over-rated. I wear foundation every day but only because I work in a fancy schmance office. I say, enjoy your natural beauty and the glory of young skin while you can. Makeup doth not make the woman!

Grits said...

It's totally a personal choice. I wear makeup nearly everyday (maybe minus Saturday if I'm working out) and I know part of it is b/c it makes me comfortable and part of it is because I'm Southern and that's what we do. Also, it is our Mamas that teach us how to do make up, with a little help from our friends...;-)
You should definitely visit Sephora, they have all kinds of good stuff! Can't wait to see what your wedding makeup looks like!

You don't need makeup - you're gorgeous!
I'm not much of a makeup person either. I wear translucent powder every day because I look a bit shiny after I apply moisturizer. That's about it. My New Year's resolution was to wear mascara every day to work but that lasted for about a week. I wear makeup if I'm going out at night but I cannot be arsed to get made up for work. Who am I trying to impress there?

This is an awesome post, katelin. This is also evidence that you'd make a really good role model.

And from the male perspective, too much makeup too often actually kinda freaks us out and intimidates us. The guys that are really into all that? Well, let's say they're a certain "type". You know the type.

You look great without make-up.. there's no need for you to wear it daily!! I on the other hand look about 12 without make-up on. Considering I'm 26 and work as a manager.. not really the best thing! =)

You're one of those girls who just look flawless without it. Lucky girl! I'd stay just the way you are, like you said. Beautiful!

I really don't wear make-up either. I do powder my face because I have eczema and my face is blotchy. Other than that, nothing. I do, however, really like to buy make-up.

but my mom does wear makeup

I find myself wearing less and less makeup as the years go by. I think it is really just laziness.

Claire said...

Aww you're really pretty!! And no, you're not the only person out there that doesn't wear makeup. Hehe. Quite often I'll go to work without wearing any and never feel any shabbier for it.

Thanks for sharing that post. You have such a pretty smile. :-D

I started wearing makeup in middle school and never really stopped. However, I've learned that when I don't wear make up people think I'm 16... and when I do, people think I'm about 19 or 20. So now I mostly wear it to look older, haha.

I love you outlook and you look beautiful without any makeup!

Good for you! Youre so naturally pretty you don't need it, and honestly it's not the best thing for your face -- it keps your pores from breathing and I honestly think that the more you wear it the more you need it. I wear it because I think it's fun to play around with, like a five-year-old playing dress up, but every once in a while I like to go au natural too. I'm rambling. Anyways, good for you, don't be embarassed! :)

Andhari said...

I agree that women should not wear make up everyday, give the skin time to breath. So what if you have some spots on the face right? I know I don't wear make up everyday too :)

shara said...

When I wear makeup, it's an event. The majority of the time I go without, and the spots and freckles and lines suit me well enough. And even when I do put on makeup it's not all that much, lipstick, mascara and maybe a touch of blue eyeliner on the lower lid to make the whites nice and sparkly. Imagine all the people out of work (and the animals out of cages) if there was no makeup at all. Seems a silly thing to cover up natural imperfect (real) beauty in pursuit of a flawless imitation of it. Better an imperfect original than a perfect copy any day.

It's an odd day when I put on makeup on... but I very rarely wear it in the summer, because it slides right off!

Brittney said...

I think its because you have great skin on its own. I'm 26 but have the skin of a less-than-awesome 13 year old so maybe that's why I cling to makeup! LOL.

I'm the same way. I'd prefer to wear less but I feel like I look 15 without it.. but if I try to put a lot on, I feel like everyone whispers about that clown-faced girl behind my back. So I meet in the middle with mascara and then natural eyeshadow (which in itself is retarded.. eyeshadow that looks like its not there? whaaaaat?).

I rarely wear make-up. Last week, I fell and got a bit of a bruise by my lip. People at work immediately started offering ideas on how to conceal it with make-up and I? Looked at them like they were crazy.

I definitely don't wear makeup everyday. And when I do wear it? It's like, eyeliner and that's all.

you're not the only one... I am very much the same: almost always fresh faced.

sarahdotcom said...

You are totally beautiful, and your skin is amaaaaazing.

Make up is overrated. Foundation, concealer, etc, has no meaning to me. If I'm going out, its tinted moisturizer and some mascara. I give myself about 9 minutes from the time I wake up until the time I'm out the door to go to work during the week, so squeezing any sort of make up into that time? Doesn't usually happen.

Keep rockin' the fresh face. You look awesome.

Doniree said...

You're naturally stunning, dear! And if you don't like it, don't wear it! You sure as hell don't need it with gorgeous skin like that.

That being said, I LOVE makeup. I also love feeling fresh-faced and makeup-less too, but I used to work at ULTA... and always LOVED playing with makeup when I was younger. Now, I can't get enough of Mac's bright and funky colors, but you know me... I can't do much quietly :)

to each HER own!

Katelin, I'll be 29 in 15 days (woot!) and I don't wear make-up! Maybe it's cuz we're totally twinsies, haha. I *own* makeup and only just recently (last 2 months) have applied it a few times. Just eye make up and lipstick. I cannot be bothered w/ foundation, cover-up etc. It's fun to get a little dolled up, make your eyes pop or your lips stand out. However if someone said I had to wear make-up every day or never at all, I'd take never at all!!
Don't even worry about it girl. And no one ever showed me how to put it on either, haha.
