August 28th, 1963.

So I know I've been talking a lot of wedding talk lately, but really people? Can you blame me? I mean there is 40 something days left and apparently I've turned into an insomniac and a crafter and a travel agent in the last three weeks so it's easy to say I've got wedding on the brain.

However this post is not really about our wedding, it's about our wedding date, August 28th.

For some reason I never thought to look up if August 28th had any significance or someone's birthday before we even picked (not that it would have mattered, I just usually find those things interesting) And of course I know that Al Pacino, Jason Lee and Renee Zellweger all share my birthday and Matt has the same birthday as Sigmund Freud so you would think I'd have some interest in our wedding date right?

Well as no surprise there are some famous birthdays on August 28th (Shania Twain, Leann Rimes and Jason Priestly) but who cares about birthdays when your wedding date shares a date with something so famous in history and important in your life?

On August 28th, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.

We are getting married on the anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech and you have no idea how proud and amazing and just overwhelmed I am at that fact. For one, in the second grade I was adopted into the "I Have a Dream" Foundation and I attribute so many wonderful things in my life to them that they deserve their own post one day. And secondly, unless you're blind you know that Matt and I are an interracial couple (heck I'm interracial on my own, haha) and if it wasn't for people like Martin Luther King Jr. I might not have been able to marry Matt, let alone been born.

I know it's really not a whole lot to share dates, I mean there are only 365 days in a year so of course events are going to overlap, but to have our wedding date on the same day as something so important to our nation's history and my life is simply awesome.

oh hey Martin, thanks for sharing the dream.

happy wednesday!

So amazing!

My daughter was born on MLK Jr Day, the day before Obama's inauguration. I like to think of it as hope for the future. That someday, color really won't matter.

I've been following your blog for months now and I just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed reading all of your wedding updates. I'm getting married as well and I was so excited to see that we share the same wedding date! I'll be getting married in Colorado, but I had to comment on your post today. I just wanted to thank you for sharing this information about MLK. What a special day it will be for you and I'm excited to now know that I get to share this exact same date. SO AWESOME!

Best of luck with your wedding! I'm currently in DIY wedding favor/program hell! I need more hands!!! :-)

Very cool :)

A few weeks before our wedding, I found out that our wedding date was the same date as my auntie and uncle's anniversary. I was so close to my aunt growing up and she died 2 years before I got married so it was really awesome and ... comforting somehow to have that connection to her on our special day.

Uuummmm.... you totally forgot to mention that if were not adopted into the "I have a Dream" Foundation, you would have never gone to Poly... and thus you would have never met Matt! (and me) ... and you would probably just be a sad lonely kid... (sad face)... okay, maybe not the last part. Yay! August 28th! Can't wait!

Wow, that is so cool! I feel ashamed that I didn't just know that when I saw the date at the beginning of a post. I sometimes feel like we should know these dates. I know I've learned them. Alas, I do not remember. Way to go on the date picking! :)
