And as we met with DJs the constant question of requests and playlist selections have come up. So of course I've been thinking about it a while and as I've gone to weddings over the past two years I've sort of put together a small list of songs that HAVE to be played at our wedding. I've also thought of some that I could definitely pass on. It's not really that adequate but it's not horrible and don't judge please and no "bridezilla" comments either, because that's just not cool.
So far this is sort of what we have:
No Thank You:
YMCA
The Macarena
Electric Slide

It's Okay to play:
The Chicken Dance (it is a family tradition after all)

So you'd think I'd have a better grip on danceable wedding songs that don't scream "I'm at a college party/middle school dance/backyard BBQ" but I sort of don't. And this is where you come in my dear freaders. Help a girl (and her guy) out with some musical suggestions. Luckily I have a better idea for the ceremony and cocktail hour music but even that's iffy. Basically throw out any and all songs good for a fun times wedding, because clearly that's what we're having.
Thanks in advance, you rock my musical socks off.
happy wednesday!

"do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight... get down tonight"
I read lots of blogs that I love (esp yours) but I usually don't comment (I know, lame!) but I have to on this one! I just got married in March and I stressed so much over my music that I ended up not even doing a list! The dj, thank goodness was amazing, but I still regret not making my list. So, here are some songs that would've made my list if I made one:
Jack Johnson - Better Together
Beach Boys - Wouldn't it be nice
Van Morrison - Into the mystic
Temptations - My girl
Ugh, now I'm stuck I know I have so many more on my list, I might have to re-comment later! But I definitely would've used Adam Sandler's Grow Old With You for something...maybe cake cutting? Good luck, I hope you get all the songs you want and don't overthink it like I did! :)
Good luck w/dj's I will never forget how one stiffed by bro after he gave a deposit.... check these guys out thoroughly.
I have a bit of a list.. which is sort of embarrassing since there are still 12 months to go! But I'm still torn on narrowing things down - if anything, I have TOO much music I want to use!
I kind of want to sneak in the occasional Glee number, hehe.
i am SO at a loss for music too. mind if i take a cue from your readers on this one too? :)
so far though on the must haves are:
"Say Hey (I Love You)" by All Rebel Rockers
"You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" by The Righteous Brothers (think top gun. the men have aviators. there will be hilarity)
"Make You Feel My Love" by Adele (in the running to be our first dance)
"Everything" by Michael Buble
"Heaven" by either Bryan Adams or DJ Sammy... haven't decided yet
"Could Not Ask for More" by Sara Evans (Super Cheesy, but it has such a special story)
"Faithfully" by Journey (or the cast of Glee, because let's be honest here... this is one of my most favorite songs EVER and Rachel and Finns version last night had me in TEARS. Also in the running for first dance.)
"You're my Best Friend" by Queen (I think this is the song that we're all going to walk into the reception to)
"Walkin' on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves
Some Lady Gaga even though I hate her, my MOH LOVES her, so there will be that.
And that's about all I have so far. I've got three and a half hours to fill and i'm so lost.
Even though my wedding was nearly five years ago, through the power of Gmail I still have the list I sent to my DJ.
I took a screenshot of the iTunes playlist I made for dinner/cocktail hour. If you want that, DM me on Twitter and I'll mail it to you.
Here ya go! (I know some of my DO NOT PLAY is on your MUST PLAY list, so disregard.)
Bridal party entrance at reception: “Galvanize” by Chemical Brothers
Brent and Nanette’s entrance/first dance song: “It Had To Be You” by Harry Connick, Jr.
Cake cutting: “Ice Cream” by Sarah McLaughlin
Bouquet toss: “Ladies Night” by Kool and the Gang
Garter removal and toss: “Let’s Get It On” by Al Green
Last dance: “Save The Last Dance For Me” by Michael Buble
MUST PLAY – DANCING
Wanna Be Startin’ Something – Michael Jackson
Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough – Michael Jackson
DO NOT PLAY
Country
Macarena
Chicken dance
YMCA
Celebration – by Kool and the Gang
Hokey Pokey
No games of any sort
Let's Get it Started - Black Eyed Peas
A Little Less Conversation (Remix) Elvis
All the Right Moves - One Republic
Love of a Lifetime - Firehouse
I could probably find 100's going through my Itunes library
Good Luck!
"Dancing Queen" was a big hit at our wedding among the baby boomer crowd AND the younger crowd.
"Sweet Caroline" was also a hit, but we had a nerdy group of Neil Diamond fans.
people love old school hip hop
Whenever I hear "I Gotta Feeling", like right now on my ipod, I think of our wedding. It's the first song the DJ played after our slow dance together. And it definitely got everyone in the party mood!!
Hm...I always have so many ideas when I'm not asked. Then when I am, they all leave my head! Hahaha.
Right now? I'm coming off the Glee finale high so I'm gonna throw that out there. I'll keep brainstorming though!
JOURNEY! You need some Journey. Don't Stop Believin' is a great crowd singalong at a wedding, especially when played later in the evening after people have had a few drinks :)
Those are some good songs and I would also say just play what YOU love. It's your wedding so it's all about you and have fun!
I've gotta second some Journey!! Those tunes are so much fun to sing in a crowd :D
I love your choices so far tho, you're wedding is going to be such a blast!!
last year when Renee was getting married I found a great list somewhere on the interwebs.
I'm assuming you already sent out your invitations BUT if people are RSVPing on a website you could add a page of music suggestions! Several of my friends did that (included a line on the invitations for guests to suggest a favorite song) and incorporated some of them into the evening!
personally, you need a little Madonna, a little Journey, maybe a little Gaga, definitely an Elton John of some sort (Tiny dancer?) and maybe a few piano bar type songs that people will all sing along to like Sweet Caroline and etc!
Rick Astley, Never Gonna Give You Up.
Duh.
<3
"Blame it on the boogie."
And a bunch of ABBA songs from Mama Mia ...
"The way you look tonight"
oh jesus, i've never been married but I can tell you I made a list of do not plays. I agree with all your "no thank" you list but I hate shout, I would also add anything Ricky Martin like Livin' La Vida Loca. (You never know, this may be requested.)
Do you remember by Jack Johnson is an awesomely sweet song to play at a wedding!!
And I also suggest playing shout.. twice hahaha
Wonderful tonight - Eric Clapton
I think it's the best lovesong ever...
Daniela
Who in their right mind would play the Chicken Dance at their wedding? So tacky.
Brick house. Done and done.
i love the electric slide. {boggie woggie...haha} but i am totally with you on not playing all the others. i'd probably add the chicken dance to the no play as well. but it's your wedding and you can funky chicken if you want to!
what will be the dance you and matt are dancing to? what will you guys be entering to? i love all that kind of stuff. so much fun.
oh, and father/daughter dance?
ps, i just want to put out there...as a response to A.D....
it's their playlist, and if they want to play the chicken dance, they can have the chicken dance played. fool. for crying out loud, if they want the barney song played, they can have it played. it's katelin and matt's day. they get to decide what jams they want.
that is all. :o)
OMG I thnk we had the same DO NOT PLAY and YOU NEED TO PLAYS although You Got a Feeling wasn't around then, otherwise it would have been on there. At the time the big hit was American Boy and my NY crew screamed that part when they say New York and the LA crew yelled out LA! Fun times. Although Chicken Dance was a no for us, an OK to Play was that cha cha cha version of the electric slide though. September was defintely a must play for us too since that was my maiden name in ITalian, so it's a family tradition.
Our must plays included Sweet Caroline, Mika's Grace Kelly, Uptown Girl, Take on Me, Livin on a Prayer, Wyclef's Perfect Gentleman and Like a Prayer (and sooo many more...) It was a tad random, but so much fun! At my sister's wedding we also added Single Ladies- so much fun for a bouquet toss :)
...OH, and Come on Eileen, Twist and Shout, Summer of 69, Oh What A Night and Van Morrison's Moondance. The Beatles early stuff is always a hit with all ages.
